Research Achievements
Dr. S. Kathiresan is specialized in Genetic engineering and Transgenic, especially microalgal transformation for the production high value metabolites. He first developed the Agrobacterium mediated genetic transformation protocol for the green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis and produced the transgenic. He cloned the gene responsible for Beta carotene ketolase (BKT) and transformed to H. pluvialis and overexpressed the ketocarotenoid, Astaxanthin by increasing the copy number in the same homologous host. He also optimized the culture media condition for growth, pigments (phycobiliproteins -phycocyanin,  phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin) and poly unsaturated fatty acids like DHA, EPA production from red microalga Porphyridium purpureum. He has published several research articles in peer-reviewed international journals, a patent and presented the papers in several national and international conferences.
